The arrival of summer and the favorable climatic conditions have led to a significant increase in tick infestations throughout Northern Sardinia, in the areas of Olbia, Arzachena, Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo, Palau, Santa Teresa, Baja Sardinia, Siniscola, San Teodoro, Budoni, Nuoro.
Ticks are arthropods, belonging to the order of Ixodidae included in the class of Arachnids, the same as spiders, mites and scorpions.
The activity of ticks is strongly linked to the values of temperature and humidity and is mainly concentrated in the warm months.
In the winter season they tend to protect themselves from the cold by taking refuge under the stones, burying themselves deeply, in the cracks in the rocks or in the cracks in the walls of chicken coops and shelters.
The presence of ticks is found mainly in areas rich in grassy and shrubby vegetation in which the presence of parasitic hosts is found.
The preferred habitats of ticks are therefore stables, animal shelters and pastures, where the presence of animals, but also of people, is considerable.
Ticks need a blood meal to live and pass from one vital stage to the next.
Equipped with a mouthparts (rostrum) capable of penetrating the skin and sucking the blood of the guests, ticks procure a painless bite by inoculating the host with a certain amount of saliva that contains anesthetic principles.
Generally, ticks remain attached to the host for a period ranging between 2 and 7 days and then drop spontaneously.
The tick can be a vector of infectious diseases of epidemiological relevance such as rickettsiosis, ehrilichiosis, tick-borne meningoencephalitis, Lyme disease, tularemia, tick-borne encephalitis or TBE, tick-borne recurrent fever.
Tick-borne infectious diseases, if not recognized and therefore not treated, can create chronic ailments and in some cases lead to death.
It is therefore important to intervene specifically against ticks, through preventive actions and disinfestation interventions.
It is strongly recommended to carefully manage the habitats preferred by ticks, avoiding that they can settle undisturbed in them.
It is important to treat pets with special anti-tick pesticides and prevent wild animals from passing through the areas where pets stay.
In case of ticks it is necessary to carry out targeted disinfestation interventions against ticks.
