COMMON NAME: Woodworm mite
SIZE: females up to 1 mm in length
LIFECYCLE: their presence increases exponentially with the arrival of high temperatures in summer.
FEATURES: A very small arthropod, related to ticks. Adults have four pairs of legs and puncturing-suction mouth parts.
HABITAT: Their presence is an unequivocal sign of the presence of termites in wood beams, furniture, and general furnishings.
DIET: Usually feeds at the expense of the woodworms: they sting and inject a poison that has the dual function of paralyzing and digesting. Once the tissues have liquefied, the mite sucks them up to feed itself. When insufficient wood-destroying insects are available, it will turn to humans.
DAMAGE: Woodworm mite bites creates small vesicles on the skin that causes severe itching.
