SPECIES: Sitophilus zeamais ( order Coleoptera)
COMMON NAME: Maize weevil
SIZE: 3-4 mm
LIFECYCLE: The larva develops from the egg and feeds on the nutrient substances in the kernel, which is gradually emptied. The larvae therefore always pupate inside the seed, and emerge only on reaching adulthood.
FEATURES: brown-amaranthine in colour
HABITAT: corn plantations, warehouses, silos etc.
DIET: Generally infests cereals, but can also be found in buckwheat, peas, dried chestnuts and pasta.
DAMAGE: The greatest damage is essentially due to the larval stage. S. zeamais attacks the kernels in the plants in the field, laying an egg in each kernel and continuing their development and reproduction in silos and warehouses.
