COMMON NAME: Bacon beetle
SIZE: larva from 2-13 mm.
LIFECYCLE: females lay from 100 to 200 eggs, either individually, or in groups. The wintering larvae are able to resist temperatures below zero for a long time. While developing, they require temperatures of no more than 30°C.
FEATURES: Photophobic. The larvae are characterized by showy tufts of bristles, particularly to the rear of the abdomen. Adults have good flying capabilities.
HABITAT: meat processing plants, skin storage, etc.
DIET: foodstuffs and animal products, including wool, fur, fatty substances, dried and smoked meats, etc.
DAMAGE: holes in fabrics, skins, and wood; contamination of foodstuffs in general. The bristles of the larvae can cause dermatitis, asthma by inhalation, and ulcers if ingested.
