COMMON NAME: Brown rat
SIZE: Body 19-26 cm; tail 15-22 cm, longer than the head and body combined.
WEIGHT: 300 gr.
LIFECYCLE: Reproduces in spring-summer with 3-5 litters of 4-7 young on average. Gestation lasts 22-24 days, and the young reach sexual maturity in three months.
HABITAT: lives in colonies, nesting under the ground near streams, neglected and overgrown areas (sewers, wells blacks etc.)
DIET: omnivore, with a preference for foods of animal origin. Consumes 25-60 grams each day.
DAMAGE: is the largest of the cosmopolitan species and is also the one that currently presents the greatest risk to humans from a health perspective.
